KANSAS CITY, Mo. – River of Refuge is ready to celebrate its first full year with the Transitional Living Program open and successfully graduating families to independent living. This year’s Raise the Roof gala will be a fun-filled fundraising party where guests will raise money, raise a glass and raise roofs for homeless families in the Kansas City community.
The sixth annual event is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at Lone Summit Ranch at 28701 East Old US 50 Hwy Lake Lotawana, MO 64086.
The evening will include: dinner, a silent and live auction and live entertainment for as many as 350 guests. KCTV 5 Anchor Carolyn Long with serve as the Master of Ceremonies, professional comedian and magician Mike Bliss will be the entertainment and the night will include other entertainment including music and activities.
River of Refuge, which opened its first apartments in May 2016, provides Kansas City homeless families an apartment and food while they participate in a transitional living program in which they learn life skills such as budgeting, financial security and permanent housing.
Throughout Kansas City, River of Refuge estimates that hundreds of working families are homeless. They live in unsafe motel rooms, in their cars or on a friend’s couch. Often times, these expensive, rundown, motels make it difficult for families to save money to find permanent homes. River of Refuge is dedicated to working with Kansas City homeless families to teach them the skills they need to live independently and maintain financial security.
“Now that we have families living in the apartments, our financial needs are more critical than ever,” said Stephanie Keck, executive director of River of Refuge.
“Therefore our annual fundraiser is more significant than ever. We are so thankful for our loyal supporters and hope to spread the word about the good work and progress we’re doing at River of Refuge so that more people can become aware of this problem right here in our own community.”

About River of Refuge
Area community leader, John Wiley founded River of Refuge in 2009 when he noticed a group of children loading a school bus from the parking lot of a motel near his home in Raytown, Mo. River of Refuge was conceived to specifically address the hundreds of working poor families who are homeless and living in pay-by-the-week motels throughout Greater Kansas City.
The nonprofit assisted families for several years before it opened its Transitional Living Program in the former Park Lane Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., to serve as a regional lodging complex for homeless families. The complex at 5155 Raytown Rd., provides a direct alternative to pay-by-the-week motels as well as offer financial support and access to significant community resources needed to be successful in finding permanent housing.
